Almost SoS: 2005 – You Tell Me

Song of the Summer: “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey
No song was bigger in 2005 (or the entire decade) than Mariah’s monster ballad. Built on a sparse drum-and-piano track (somewhat similar to Lil’ Jon’s “Lovers and Friends”), Carey is the most emotionally resonant she’s ever been. As a result, this classic cut ruled the airwaves all summer, breaking all sorts of airplay records. I’d love to find a song I felt was more worthy of the title, but… no.

Almost SoS: You tell me
Carey definitely had artists who sought to compete with “Belong” for summer radio dominance — from Kanye West (“Gold Digger”), to upstarts Rihanna and the Pussycat Dolls (with their respective debut singles “Pon de Replay” and “Don’t Cha”), to Gwen Stefani (“Hollaback Girl”) to Carey herself (with the follow-up single “Shake it Off”). But not only was “Belong” so universally adored, the colossal Carey comeback story it fueled effectively nixed the resentment that often accompanies a song so ubiquitous. Plus, every one of those other songs was a hit in its own right — each a potential candidate for Uptempo SoS 2005.

So it’s only fitting as we arrive at the halfway mark, that I leave this one up to you. What song do you feel deserved to have been SoS 2005? I check the pageviews. I know you’re out there. Don’t make me come find you.

You say “classic cut”, I say meh. Didn’t like it then, don’tlike it now.

  2. Queen of Swords says:

As much as I dont like Kanye…if you hear Golddigger now…you’ll still sing along and get crunk (depending on how much you’ve had to drink). I agree with Dayo…me no likey “We belong together” so much. A SOS shouldn’t be a ballad…I mean seriously..summer is fun and sun and glitter falling from the sky because when you step out at any given time of day it’s hot…you wanna dance..party…be happy and shit..not moon over some unrequited love lost…
